4 Easy Steps to Begin Your Zero Waste Lifestyle

You might have been thinking about it for a while now. You want to begin your Zero Waste journey, but don’t know where to start. Fear not, our 4 steps to begin your Zero Waste lifestyle will set you up for success.

First, don’t panic, there is absolutely no need to get rid of all your disposable items and run out to the store and buy new, eco-friendly ones. After all, using up your disposable items first is part of the journey toward Zero Waste. Only when you have used them up, you can start replacing them with reusable, more sustainable products.

Now, let’s take a closer look at these easy-to-take-steps toward Zero Waste. Ready? Let’s go!

Bring your own reusable water bottle

Going on a trip? Taking that long-anticipated hike around the lake? Wonderful! You will have an amazing time. All you have to remember is to make that simple decision to bring your own reusable water bottle with you. Ask yourself each time before you leave the house, “did I bring my keys, my phone, my ID, and my water bottle?”

Did you know that Canadians produce more garbage per capita than any other country on the globe? This is a huge problem made worse by the fact that Canada ends up recycling only about 9% out of its plastics waste.

So by bringing your own reusable water bottle, you will save the environment one bottle at a time … and don’t forget to bring the sandwiches. 🙂

Switch to a bamboo or biodegradable toothbrush

Switching to a bamboo toothbrush is surely a simple way to reduce the use of plastic in your home. Nowadays, you can find these little beauties pretty much anywhere. So there is no reason not to ‘go Bamboo,’ and ditch the plastic toothbrushes.

Did you know that early forms of the toothbrush have been in existence since 3000 BC? However, the first bristle toothbrush resembling the modern one was invented in China. Used during the Tang Dynasty (619–907), it had a handle manufactured from bamboo or bone.

Back to the roots, we would say!

Go paperless and don’t accept any junk mail

The most obvious reason to go fully digital is the reduction of paper usage. Also, by going paperless you won’t be part of a world that continues to extensively kill trees and disrespect nature.

And all it takes are a few clicks. Start with your bank statements. Next step: Say no to junk mail in your mailbox.

Create your own cleaning solutions

Traditional cleaning still relies heavily on chemical solutions, plastic bottles, plastic bags, disposable wipes, and other harmful products. Of course, it doesn’t have to be that way.

It really doesn’t require too much effort to set up your lifestyle toward a Zero Waste cleaning routine. To help you on your way, Zero Waste Canada created the Zero Waste Cleaning Guide that aims at helping you reduce toxins and waste in your home and transition into a true, Zero Waste lifestyle.

There you go. It couldn’t be easier!
